Forces depart San Diego, destination may shift to the Middle East
Three U.S. Navy ships carrying approximately 2,200 Marines departed San Diego this week on a deployment originally planned for the Indo-Pacific region.
However, according to two U.S. officials who spoke with ABC News, the final destination for these forces will most likely be the Middle East.
⸻
Deployment Composition
The forces belong to the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (11th MEU), deployed aboard three ships: • USS Boxer • USS Comstock • USS Portland
Accompanying them are approximately 2,000 sailors, forming a complete amphibious ready group.
The complement includes: • Infantry forces • Logistics units • Air assets including fighter jets, MV-22 Ospreys, and attack helicopters
⸻
Other Forces Already En Route to the Middle East
Previously, the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (31st MEU) had already received orders from the Pentagon and is moving from Asia to the Middle East, amid reports that Iran’s attack capabilities have declined significantly following recent confrontations.
⸻
Travel Time and Rerouting Capability
The USS Boxer group is expected to take about 2 weeks to reach Southeast Asia. If ordered to continue, the forces would need additional time to enter the Middle East.
⸻
Speculation About Potential Missions
The consecutive deployment of MEU units has led to speculation that U.S. forces may: • Target Kharg Island — Iran’s key oil export hub • Or conduct patrol operations at the Strait of Hormuz to ensure maritime security.
There has been no official confirmation of a specific mission.
⸻
Official Response from the U.S. Navy
The U.S. Navy’s 3rd Fleet stated that the 11th MEU is still conducting routine operations in the Indo-Pacific region to maintain combat readiness.
⸻
Overview
The large-scale force deployment amid rising regional tensions shows the U.S. is maintaining a high state of readiness for real-world scenarios, while keeping options open for strategic adjustments based on the latest developments.
