A large group of cyclists was stopped by California police just before they could carry out their plan to “take over” the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, preventing potential chaos on the vital transportation corridor.

Reckless Riding, Going Against Traffic

According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the group traveled through multiple streets in San Francisco exhibiting dangerous behavior:

  • Weaving between traffic lanes
  • Riding dangerously close to moving vehicles
  • Even crashing directly into moving cars

As they approached the bridge, the group entered Harrison Street and rode against traffic to reach the bridge entrance.

Police Ambush, Stopped Right Before the Bridge

CHP officers coordinated with San Francisco police to monitor the group in real time.

Units had been pre-positioned at the bridge entrance area. As the group approached, police immediately blocked them, preventing them from entering the highway.

Helicopter footage showed law enforcement surrounding and controlling the entire group on the approach road.

85 People Detained, All Bicycles Confiscated

In total:

  • 85 people were detained and cited
  • 85 bicycles were confiscated

All individuals were later released on the spot but face violations related to illegally riding bicycles on the highway.

Police said the bicycles would be checked against the stolen property database — if any violations are found, additional charges may follow.

Many Participants Were Very Young

Authorities confirmed many participants were minors, with the youngest being just 9 years old. This is reminiscent of the increasing trend of juveniles being arrested for public disorder incidents in recent times.

This raises heightened concerns about safety and control within these types of group gatherings.

Major Risk If They Had Reached the Highway

Police emphasized that if the group had managed to get onto the bridge or highway:

  • Vehicle speeds are much higher
  • The risk of serious accidents would have been enormous

A CHP representative stated: “This is not a harmless game. This kind of behavior is unacceptable.”

Growing Trend Challenges Law Enforcement

Authorities said these types of groups are becoming increasingly common, often organizing large-group rides similar to car racing events causing chaos in San Francisco and engaging in behavior that challenges other road users.

The operating pattern is compared to “sideshow” groups, prompting authorities to continually issue warnings about the dangers of street takeovers spreading across many cities.

Overview

The incident was brought under control before it could escalate into a traffic crisis.

Police said they will continue to monitor and strictly enforce against similar behavior to prevent the risk of serious accidents.
