A man in Florida was recently arrested after allegedly breaking into and vandalizing a Chinese restaurant in Orange County. The suspect, identified as Richard Jarvis, reportedly committed violent acts in the kitchen area and attacked the owner over reasons linked to conspiracy theories.
According to reports from authorities, Jarvis entered Pearl’s Chinese restaurant and used a shovel to destroy property. Witness Vanessa Trejo said she was shocked to see the man repeatedly swinging the shovel at employees on the scene.
Motive Driven by Delusional Conspiracy Theories
During police questioning, Jarvis claimed he was acting as a "prophet" to prevent the spread of the pandemic. The man believed that Chinese restaurants were preparing to release a new strain of COVID-19 in early July.
"I had to destroy that restaurant. All Chinese restaurants are going to release a new COVID strain on July 6th. I am a prophet; I am trying to save everyone," Jarvis told law enforcement.
Serious Damage and Legal Charges
Authorities stated that the vandalism caused thousands of dollars in property damage to the establishment. Currently, Richard Jarvis is being held in custody and faces multiple serious criminal charges.
The specific charges against the suspect include:
- Aggravated battery: Attacking the owner and employees with a weapon.
- Assault: Disturbance and threatening the safety of those nearby.
- Burglary: Breaking into private areas of the restaurant to carry out the vandalism.
Following the incident, several neighboring business owners in Orange County said they will enhance security measures to protect their premises. The local community is also calling for support for Pearl’s Chinese restaurant to help them stabilize their business and feel safer.
